Updates have been made to guidance for police forces on implementing the 'Best use of stop and search' scheme.

The updates reflect the removal of the voluntary conditions on section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994, following the announcement in the Beating Crime Plan this summer.

The best use of stop and search scheme was initially announced by former Prime Minister Theresa May in her statement to Parliament on 30 April 2014.

The scheme aims to improve public confidence and trust through greater transparency, an intelligence-led approach and community involvement in the use of stop and search powers. Its features are:

  • data recording
  • lay observation policies
  • stop and search complaints ‘community trigger'
