Interventions to reduce violence against women and girls (VAWG) in public spaces
1 min read

Round three of the Safer Streets Fund has an emphasis on the safety of women and girls, primarily through the design and management of public spaces. On 3 October 2021, the Home Office announced that 57 projects had been awarded grant funding, including the British Transport Police.

The successful bids comprise a range of creative interventions, including:

  • bystander training programmes
  • guardianship schemes
  • street pastors
  • taxi marshals
  • safe haven spaces
  • educational and awareness raising initiatives working with schools and young people
  • personal safety applications
  • the use of a theatre production to challenge attitudes and behaviours

A 2019 report by the Local Government Association, Approaches to managing the night-time economy, provides some case studies involving policing and other partner agencies.
