Assessment and Recognition of Competence (ARC)

ARC confirms a constable as fully competent and able to be deployed into any relevant operational role within force, or if needed, to other forces in England and Wales.

During the ARC Assessment process you will be assessed against:

  • Initial Assessment Units
  • Relevant behaviours from the Policing Professional Framework (PPF)
  • Your own CPD

ARC assessment criteria are based on the old Policing Professional Framework Personal Qualities, Learning Units (2016) and your own CPD. This was fully consulted on, evaluated and signed off during the Defining and Assessing Competence (DAC) Pilot. The assessment criteria for ARC remain the same, however due to the introduction of the Policing Professional Profiles (PPP) this is currently under review.

Officers and their forces are advised to be mindful of the new Competency and Values Framework (CVF) and PPP when undertaking their Performance Development Reviews (PDR). Visit our Professional Development Platform for more information.
