PNC - Police National Computer

The Police National Computer (PNC) is used to facilitate investigations and sharing information of both national and local importance.  It affords mission critical services to the police, UK Law Enforcement and criminal justice agencies throughout the United Kingdom.  It also links in with the European-wide IT system called Schengen Information System (SIS II) that enables all participating member states to share real-time information on persons and objects of interest via a series of 'Alerts'.

The PNC provides real-time checks on people, vehicles, crimes and property as well as the following SIS II Alerts:

  • Persons wanted for extradition (Article 26)
  • Missing persons (Article 32)
  • People wanted for judicial purposes (Article 34)
  • People or vehicles requiring discreet checks (Article 36)
  • Misappropriated, lost or stolen objects sought for the purposes of seizure or evidential purposes (Article 38).

The list of available learning programmes for the PNC are as follows:

  • PNC Browser – is designed for individuals who access the PNC through web browser software and need to gain an understanding of SIS II information and develop skills in PNC Names Enquiry to national competency standards.
  • PNC Manager – is designed to enable individuals with supervisory/line management responsibility for PNC operators, those responsible for PNC data standards and those who want an in-depth overview of the PNC application to undertake their role effectively.
  • PNC Names Enquiry – is designed for individuals to gain an understanding of SIS II information and develop their skills using the PNC Names database to national competency standards.
  • PNC Offence Processing – is designed for experienced PNC Names operators to develop their skills in updating offence processing elements of the PNC Names application to national competency standards.
  • PNC Queries Using Extended Search Techniques (QUEST) – is designed for experienced PNC Names operators, especially those working as crime analysts and trainers who wish to train Quest, to develop their skills in extended searching techniques.
  • PNC Vehicle and Property Enquiry - is designed for individuals to gain an understanding of SIS II information and develop their skills using the PNC Vehicle and Property database to national competency standards.
  • PNC Vehicle and Property Update is designed for experienced PNC Vehicle operators to develop their skills in updating SIS II information and vehicle and property records to national competency standards.
  • PNC Vehicle Online Descriptive Searching (VODS) is designed for experienced PNC Vehicle operators, especially those working as crime/vehicle crime analysts and control room operators to develop their skills in online descriptive searching.
  • PNC Wanted/Missing/Disqualified Driver Names Update – is designed for experienced PNC Names operators to gain an understanding of SIS II information and develop their skills in updating SIS II information and wanted missing and disqualified driver records to national competency standards.
