Radio frequency propagation survey (RFPS) practitioner and assessment

Refresh the theory and practical training of the RFPS technician course.

Radio frequency propagation survey (RFPS) is the practice of measuring cellular and wifi radio transmissions and matching them against call data to help determine where a mobile phone or wifi-enabled device was located at a particular time.

This course is designed to refresh the theory and practical training of the RFPS technician course, but also to look at some aspects in more detail.

The content is similar to previous RFPS refresher courses but will include a practical exercise and both the theory and practical elements will be formally assessed.


​To develop further the learner’s knowledge and experience of RFPS surveying.


On successful completion of this course learners will be able to:

  • understand and explain cellular network topology and the cell selection process
  • demonstrate the process for planning a survey
  • demonstrate effective RFPS survey methodology
  • analyse and critically examine RFPS survey results
  • discuss converting RFPS Survey results into an evidential report

Methods of delivery

​Trainer-led, classroom-based theory sessions and an off-site practical exercise.

Qualification eligibility

Anyone who has completed the RFPS technician course (or equivalent) and has had six months’ experience of carrying out RFPS surveys.


​Prior completion of the RFPS technician course (or another course that provides training to the same level and in the same subjects) and a minimum of six months’ experience of RFPS surveying.


Five days.

Accreditation notes:

​There will be a formal assessment of both the theory and practical elements.

The assessment is to help evidence the competence of the practitioner for accreditation purposes.
