Sharing knowledge and experience: POLKA

By joining the Special Constabulary community on POLKA (the Police OnLine Knowledge Area), you can take part in discussions with other special constables in a secure environment.

Working Time Regulations

The legal status of special constables in relation to the Working Time Regulations 1998 SI 1998/1833 is explained in an NPIA circular and executive summary from 2011, which also contain guidance for forces on applying the Regulations to the Special Constabulary. Payment following injury or illness

In 2010, an NPIA circular set out the entitlements in relation to the sick pay for special constables under existing legislation and the recommended non-statutory arrangements that forces may follow in circumstances where legislation does not apply.

Transfers and dual-force service

Guidance has been produced for forces on the process to follow in relation to serving special constables who:

  • undertake simultaneous service in more than one Home Office force ("dual-force service")
  • transfer permanently from one Home Office force to another.
