PIP Level 4 - Strategic Management of Complex Cases

Overview

​​To ensure those charged with the strategic management of investigations which are, by definition highly complex, have the necessary skills and knowledge to perform the role and thereby safeguard public confidence and the reputation of the service.

Who should attend

​This 5-day course is designed for officers who have successfully completed the PIP Level 3 Programme and evidence competency in Category A investigations OR alternatively can demonstrate experience as SIO in high profile 'critical incident' criminal investigations and evidence of competence in Major Investigations as defined by NOS.

Aims

​The course element of the programme is themed to reflect contemporary policing issues and includes investigative and technical innovation, ensuring that senior inve​stigating officers are aware of subject matter likely to be encountered by those who successfully pass through the Level 4 accreditation process.

Objectives

​The course addresses 5 core themes which charac​​terise successful policing operations namely:

  • Strategic Command and Leadership

  • Strategic Partnership​s

  • Resource Ma​​nagement

  • Strategic Ma​​nagement of Information and Intelligence

  • Public Confidence

The themes addressed during ​the course of the programme are constantly refreshed to ensure they keep pace with developing practice.

After attending this course the participa​​nt will be able to:

  • Meet the demands of t​​he most critical and challenging investigations being equipped  with high level of knowledge, understanding and skills

  • Demonstrate enhanced strategic awareness including executive and business skills to operate at this level of investigation

  • Manage high impact, complex cases that attract high levels of political and public scrutiny including Article 2 Inquests and Public Enquires

  • Consider the investigative issues beyond operational expedience, including aspects of consequence management​

Entry requirements

​Admission to the programme is available to Assistant Chief Constables, Detective Chief Superintendent and selected Detective Superintendents. Nominations must be endorsed by their respective Chief Officer​.
