Core Learning

As the title suggests, this category is core to the whole of the National Policing Curriculum.  The knowledge, understanding, skills, attitudes and behaviour covered within this category of learning are embedded across the entire curriculum provision.

This category comprises the following areas:

Communication – this area recognises the increasing demand of 21st century policing in respect of the acquisition, maintenance and development of effective communication skills on the part of police officers and staff. 

Ethics and Integrity – this area includes learning and development relating to the ethics of professional policing, as well as the Code of Ethics.  This area also covers equality and diversity.

Evidence-based Policing – this area relates to evidence-based approaches to policing and also includes the National Decision Making model.

Leadership and Management – this area covers leadership and command at all levels from initial police training to chief officer level, as well as specific learning relevant to fast-track and direct entry routes and the training of Police Trainers.  It also includes learning relevant to professional development, performance and continuous improvement.

The learning standards, together with associated learning materials including e-learning, are accessible to registered users of the College Managed Learning Environment (MLE).

National learning standards are aligned to Authorised Professional Practice (APP) and National Occupational Standards (NOS) contained within the Policing Professional Framework.
