Embedding the Code of Ethics

Materials to help police forces use the Code of Ethics as the foundation document for promoting, reinforcing and supporting the highest personal standards in policing.

In addition to the Code of Ethics itself, the College of Policing has produced a number of supporting documents:

  • Briefing note. An introduction to the supporting documents, plus advice on the day-to-day management of the Code within forces.
  • Code of Ethics summary. This document includes brief points which will be of use in promoting and describing the Code.
  • Summary of differences between the version released to forces (April 2014) and the final version laid as a code of practice (July 2014). Forces that are already using the April version can identify where the small changes made to the final version (mainly relating to the statutory basis for the Code and the full scope of the Code) occur.
  • Assessment guide. This will help forces to benchmark their current ethics-related activity, identify their areas of strength and areas for improvement, consider essential ethics-related roles and processes, and identify which areas should be amended or developed further.
  • Organisational model. This document demonstrates the actions that a "model" force may wish to complete to embed the Code of Ethics as effectively as possible. It is based on the Integrity Model developed for the police service by Transparency International and approved by the Association of Chief Police Officers in 2011, so should be familiar to all forces.
  • Reading list. Sources of information used in developing the Code of Ethics for the policing profession of England and Wales.
