Career development workshops

These workshops are for Chief Inspectors, Superintendents, Chief Superintendents, or equivalent level police staff, who are thinking about applying to attend the Strategic Command Course (SCC) within the next one to five years.

You should identify with a group which is under-represented in senior policing, for example women, Black and Minority Ethnic and/or another under-represented group.

The workshops give an overview of the structure, content and approach to the SCC, and aim to demystify the course. You will have the opportunity to observe an assessment and learn about the assessment process. You will also have the chance to discuss your personal development plans and be matched with a recent SCC graduate to be your mentor. There will be guest speakers who have recently gone through the process themselves.

We will give you as much information as possible to enable you to make an informed decision about whether the SCC is for you, and provide you with career development support. There will be opportunities during the workshop to ask the team questions on a one-to-one basis.

Further developmental opportunities will be available following attendance.

The feedback and impact of these workshops last year was extremely positive, with 95% of attendees stating they were more likely to consider applying for the SCC in future. In 2017, we saw an increase in the diversity of applications to the assessment centres and the 2018 SCC was the most diverse for at least a decade.

Feedback from attendees of the July 2018 workshop:

"It presented an opportunity to understand the content of the course and assessment, to help me determine when I might be ready and what I need to do and prepare until then."

"Extremely useful. In particular the practical examples and experiences of those successful candidates. It has dispelled some myths I had and has given me the confidence and motivation to succeed."
