External recognition for police training

After completing College course you can apply for external qualification.

Newly promoted senior officers and police staff can now apply for external qualifications through a College of Policing learning and development programme.

Senior police personnel (chief inspectors, superintendents and equivalent police staff grades) who are new to post can apply to attend our revised Senior Leadership Programme which goes live in September.

The programme will give you the skills you need at a senior level including those to lead in a complex policing environment; managing people, performance, change, finance and resources; business case development; health and wellbeing and the ability to influence others.

The programme is currently delivered free of charge for officers and staff from Home Office Forces and the forms to apply are on our website.

Once you complete the Senior Leadership Programme you are eligible to register for a Chartered Management Institute (CMI) Level 7 qualification in Strategic Management and Leadership.

This qualification is rated in academic terms as being at a comparable level to Postgraduate Certificates, Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) and Postgraduate Diplomas.

The opportunity to complete the CMI qualification is at a substantially reduced rate than if accessed outside the College and you will be responsible only for CMI registration, which is currently £145. The assessment, verification and administration costs are currently being met by us. In conjunction with CMI, we offer a variety of study resources to support you throughout the assessment process.

Jim Saunders, Leadership Tutor at the College of Policing, said:

“One of the aims of the College is to support the professional development of those working in policing.
“We listened to our members who told us they wanted qualifications with the opportunity for external recognition and we are achieving this through the revised Senior Leadership Programme.

“The College is covering the cost for members to attend the programme and also covering the majority of the cost for those who want to consolidate and accredit their learning with the Chartered Management Institute.”

Senior Leadership Programme courses are delivered at our sites in Ryton (near Coventry), Sunningdale (Berkshire) and Harperley Hall (Durham).

Local delivery will be considered subject to trainer availability, on a cost recovery basis.
