Officers, staff and members given the chance to attend Newsam Lecture

You are invited to attend a talk looking at links between work and health in policing

Officers, staff and College members are being invited to attend a unique lecture next month focussing on the vital role leaders play in creating a healthy culture in policing.

The College has hosted the annual Newsam Memorial Lecture since 2015 and this year guest speaker Dame Carol Black, principal of Newnham College, Cambridge will be giving her expert views on the relationship between work and health.

The free event, which is run in partnership with the Police Training Authority Trust, is open to all police officers and staff, and all current or past students of the College.

This year's talk will be taking place at the Victory Services Club in London from 17:30 on Monday, 6 March.

The theme for this year has been chosen in recognition of the increasing awareness in policing of the importance of health and wellbeing issues.

The College encourages police employers to invest in their staff and treat them as professionals with the ability to influence key organisational decisions. We are working to build an evidence base on staff wellbeing, procedural justice using discretionary contributions.

We have also worked closely with Public Health England to develop a Blue Light Workplace Wellbeing Charter, building on work led by Dame Black in the health sector.

The evening will also give attendees the opportunity to take part in debates and share ideas, information and best practice with colleagues from other forces and organisations.

The Newsam Lecture has been delivered annually since 1965 and aims to cover topics which are 'of public importance connected with the administration of justice or the discharge of police functions'.

Last year's speaker was Professor Ngaire Woods, Dean of the Blavatnik School of Government at Oxford University, and previous speakers include the then Home Secretary Theresa May.

Places at the lecture are limited and will be allocated on a first come first served basis, so please return your form as soon as possible.
