Police officers and staff asked for their views on advice for senior investigators

Police officers, staff and the public are being asked to give their views on proposed advice for senior detectives about investigating non-recent allegations of child sexual abuse against high profile people or institutions.

The Senior Investigating Officer (SIO) advice document has been developed using the experience and practice from officers who have previously dealt with these very sensitive and complex investigations.

The document has been collated by Operation Hydrant, which co-ordinates the national police response into allegations of non-recent child sexual abuse, and the advice approved after the consultation will be published by the College of Policing.

Learning in this area of investigation is developing all the time and the advice document has been updated frequently to ensure it contains the most up to date information to support and guide officers and staff.

The proposed version of the advice covers a number of key area which SIOs will need to consider as part of any complex investigation into allegations of child sexual abuse, including steps to take when receiving a report, dealing with victims and witnesses and managing a high profile case.

David Tucker, College of Policing crime and criminal justice lead, said: “It is vital that officers and staff investigating reports of complex crimes of this nature have access to the most up to date advice and information to support them in carrying out thorough and impartial investigations.

“As the professional body for policing we have launched this consultation to gather views of officers, staff and the public about the proposed advice to make sure it is clear and effectively balances the rights and needs of victims, witnesses and suspects.

“By taking into account the learning and experiences of senior detectives who have led investigations into child sexual abuse allegations, the police service will be able to improve investigations in the future.”

The College of Policing is now inviting feedback on the proposed SIO advice document.

The consultation opens today (September 19), and will run until 31 October 2019.

Anyone who would like to submit any comments and views can do so using the feedback template, which can be returned by email to: sioadvice2019.consultation@college.pnn.police.uk.
