PTRLDP - Coaching and Mentoring

Overview

This module addresses the skills required by those in police training roles to develop the knowledge and skills of individual learners or small groups of learners. The theory of coaching and mentoring is explored and there are some limited opportunities to put these theories into practice.​

Who should attend

​Those who are about to undertake, or have just embarked upon a police training role as defined in the Police Sector Standards for the Training of: Trainers, Instructors and Tutors.

Aims

​To introduce students to the theory and practice of coaching and mentoring.

Objectives

​Learners who have successfully completed this module will be able to:

  • explain the role of coaching within learning and show how coaching techniques may enable individuals to meet learning goals
  • explain the role of mentoring within learning and show how mentoring techniques may enable individuals to meet personal and organisational goals.

Entry requirements

​Students must first complete the Core Skills and Values module
Or
Successfully complete a formal Exemption of Attendance on the Core Skills and Values module (see further information on this process on this web page).

They must also have attended the Enabling Learning in Practice module, or have sought exemption from this from their sending police service or organisation.

A pre-requisite of attendance on all PTRLDP modules is that the learner has a sound understanding of the issues of equality, diversity and human rights within a police training context. We emphasise the importance of this as a foundation for the whole PTRLDP programme. An introduction to the necessary learning is covered by the NCALT Introduction to Diversity e-learning package, which can be completed or reviewed, as appropriate.

Students will also need to complete the Coaching and Mentoring Pre-Learning Workbook prior to attending the module.

Assessment processes / accreditation details

​There is no formal assessment of students through the module. Any assessment of competence at coaching and/or mentoring should take place in the workplace after the module and such assessment should be conducted by work-based assessors.

If students are undertaking the Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS) this module may assist them in gaining an optional unit towards this qualification. To access the CTLLS qualification, students would need to have already completed the Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector Award (PTLLS). Any of these qualifications require a commitment to studying and completing assignments in the students' own time.

Certification

​Potentially, credits towards CTLLS (see above).

Additional information

​This module will be run centrally by the College of Policing subject to demand. Please note however, that the College of Policing is also committed to facilitating local delivery of PTRLDP modules and encouraging regional training partnerships.
