Revenge porn and rape – investigator tools

College creates two products to help you investigate revenge porn and rape

We have created a briefing note for police on revenge porn to highlight new legislation and practice to officers and staff who are involved in this area of policing.

Revenge Porn is the sharing of private, sexual materials, either photos or videos, of another person without their consent and with the purpose of causing embarrassment or distress. The images are sometimes accompanied by personal information about the subject, including their full name, address and links to their social media profiles.

The offence applies both online and offline and to images which are shared electronically or in a more traditional way so includes the uploading of images on the internet, sharing by text and e-mail, or showing someone a physical or electronic image.

The new offence came into place on 13 April 2015 and those found guilty of the crime could face a sentence of up to two years in prison.

Police forces can use our briefing note to understand what offence has been committed and it includes clear definitions explaining the legislation.

Separately, investigators of serious sexual assault now have access to two toolkits which challenge the myths and stereotypes of rape before building a case for court.

The first toolkit is aimed at investigators, while the second is for supervisors and managers overseeing rape investigations.

The toolkit for investigators helps them to prepare a case for court and balances the focus of the case on the suspect’s behaviour, motives and reasons.

The toolkit for supervisors and managers should ensure an investigator’s case is built appropriately.
Both are available on POLKA.

In addition to the toolkits, which have been developed by us and the National Rape Working Group, we will publish Authorised Professional Practise for rape and sexual offences later this year.
